This is what I want to replace my A8L with.

This is why no one should ever buy the Mitsubishi Mirage. It's actually fun to drive, more powerful, generally better equipped, and cheaper. The mpg hit you take is worth it, especially since you get a power increase of about the same %, better resale (which is going to be worth way more than gas) and significantly improved safety.
EDIT: Also, I've heard that the Spark's MPG is actually underrated to get people to buy the Spark EV.

It only weighs a ton! It's only a matter of time until someone strips it and puts an LSX where the back seats should go.

So, how long until other automakers follow suit? Other than Chevy, which has the Spark, of course.

I seriously wish we had more RWD hot hatches on the market... or any, for that matter.
Nissan may be able save us with the new smaller Z, but I doubt they'll put a hatch back on it.

I am certain I would like this car, but like others have said I think I'd probably go for a Spark first.

You'd suggest The Spark? The amount of citycar offerings must be very tiny in the US for the Spark to be a serious contender.

Aside from the Mitsubishi Mirage, there's the Chevy Spark, Fiat 500, smart fortwo, Scion iQ and Mini Cooper.
That's it, really. No Ford Ka, no Audi A1, etc.

For city cars, it's the Spark, Smart Fortwo, Scion iQ or the Mirage.
The Honda Fit, Chevy Sonic, Nissan Versa, Fiat 500, Mini, etc. are all either larger, and/or much more expensive with worse MPG. The 500 excluded, they're all sedans/hatchbacks made out of a larger 4 door platform, and not a true "city car". The 500 is pretty expensive compared to the other city car offerings, though I would take it over anything else in this list.
I'd also like to mention that from 0-45mph, the Spark is actually quite fun to drive. The torque is good and it likes to throw the back end around a bit, the steering is crisp too. It's not a 'drivers' car, but it's way better than anything else Chevy has in that respect, and has more smiles-per-minute than a Camaro.

If Ford makes a hatch version of the next Mustang, I'll be very excited.

I'll have to admit I've never driven one. However, just the looks of it makes me, well let's say I don't like how it looks. In Europe there are way more cars in this segment, and at least to me most seem like much better offerings. Citroën C1, Dacia Sandero, Fiat Panda, Ford Ka, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Nissan Micra, Nissan Pixo, Opel Agila, Peugeot 107, Renault Twingo, Seat Mii, Skoda Citigo, Smart Fortwo, Suzuki Alto, Suzuki Splash, Toyota Aygo and VW Up are all cheaper or within €750 of the Spark where I live. I'd take most of these over the Spark.

Telling people to buy and own the mitsubishi mirage because it gets good fuel economy is like telling people to get a parasitic worm in their gut because they can lose some weight.

No one in the U.S. will care, its from a company no one buys and looks like crap. Future unicorn right here.

Dude, it's a fraction of the cost of the car and it gets more than double the gas mileage. It's a smart move.
Come on people. You know that I
A - Don't have an A8L
B - Don't care for hatchbacks.
C - There isn't a SINGLE Mitsubishi vehicle I'd like to drive, except for the Evo and 3000GT.
